A brief history of Wax:On

Wax:On began in 2004, it was the continuation of a smaller party called Central, which started in March 2003 at World Headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne. At Central we booked acts that we really wanted to see such as, The Herbaliser, Oli Patten (our first resident), Krafty Kuts, Bonobo, Dexter from the Avalanches, Justin Robertson, TC Monckton (our second resident), Rodney P, and The Glimmers. The parties became more and more popular and by the end of the first year we’d seen amazing performances from the likes of Roots Manuva, Scratch Perverts and Plump DJs.

Later in 2004 we decided to move to a Friday and to a bigger club called Foundation, we changed the name to Wax:On and signed up some new residents, Mixmag bedroom heroes of the month, People Get Real. In November 2004, we booked an all or nothing line up including Jacques Lu Cont, Mylo, Freq Nasty and more, everyone raised the roof and it is still to date one of the best events we’ve ever put on. The next party was with Erol Alkan and Ivan Smagghe, an event that is also very memorable as both Erol and Ivan were massive inspirations to us when Wax:On began. We continued along these lines booking all sorts of amazing artists from Stanton Warriors to Annie Mac to Tiefschwarz to Felix Da Housecat. In July 2005, Digital Night Club opened and we jumped at the chance to host Wax:On every Friday at the new venue that was quickly dubbed ‘The Fabric of the North’ by Mixmag. We opened with 2ManyDJs, followed up with Yoda, Blackstrobe, Damian Lazarus, Roni Size, Jeff Mills, Touche, Mylo, Tiga, Evil Nine, Craig Richards, Justice, and so on.

In May 2006 we took Wax:On back to monthly in Newcastle so we could concentrate all our efforts on the one show making it a big special event. This also allowed us the time to launch Wax:On in Leeds and take part in other big events around the World like Snowbombing and Exit Festival. This change worked well, as shortly after we got awarded No2 club of 2006 in Mixmag, one under Fabric Live. We continued to book varied and interesting line-ups, and saw sets fromthe likes of Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Lindstrom, DerrickMay and Brodinski, always striving to bring something new.We now reside in Leeds and host events all over the UK and in Ibiza. You can find us in clubs such as Digital, Stylus, O2 Academy, The Custard Factory and Eden, with artists such as Boys Noize, Rusko, Matthew Dear, Ryan Elliot, Doorly, Aeroplane, Sven Vath, Eskimo Twins and Fake Blood.
