Wax:On News | Eskimo Twins’ 2010 | 24th December 2010
It’s been a really exciting year for us; we’ve played some at some great parties, festivals and events, played alongside some great acts and loved every minute of it.
2010 was a very good year for new music with lots of new, interesting artists coming through and it’s been an absolute pleasure to get to play some of these tracks out. We have attempted to pick 20 of our favourite tunes from this year, however, given the amount of amazing music that appeared, there was no hope of us fitting everything in. So here’s a selection of our biggest and favourite DJ tracks of the year:
Top Club Tracks of 2010
-
Kebacid - Jack The Potato:
This has scared a few people of the dance floor this year but we love it. Dark acid techno with evil druggy synth work. Proper.
-
Simian Mobile Disco – Aspic:
This is without doubt our most played club tune of 2010. Essential peak time track, never fails.
-
Gonzalez - I am Europe (Djedjotronic Remix):
A massive one for us over the last few months, we’ve pulled this out at most gigs recently. The ridiculously catchy off-kilter riff gets the floor moving every time: indispensable.
-
Digitalism – Blitz (Harvard Bass Remix):
Not what we were expecting from a Harvard Bass remix but this absolutely blew us away. Deep, dark, hard techno. One of our favourite tunes of the year.
-
Chemical Brothers - Horse Power (Popof Remix):
This has also been a big one for us this year; deep, hard techno that leaves you feeling a bit sore. Bring lube
-
Azari and III – Indigo:
Azari and III have had a very big year. This track featured heavily in our sets for Reclaim the Dance Floor in Ibiza over the latter part of the summer. Lovely emotional feel to this but also a great club tune.
-
Coin Operated Boy – Trust Me (Clouds Remix):
This is just a great fun club track. One of those which make a crowd gurn as soon as it drops. Noisy and a bit daft, it always goes down a treat.
-
Den Haan – Burn It Up (Mr. DJ):
Huge camp disco arp-fest. This is a real guilty pleasure which seems to ignite a crowd every time it gets a spin. Looking forward to their album next year.
-
Nakion – Tell Me Something Good:
Nakion is producing some really unique and honest music at the moment. She mixes lots of influences but it has a really bedroom production feel to it. We have played this out a few times and have been surprised by how many people ‘got’ it.
-
DiskoKaine - Hall of Shame (King Of Kong Remix):
There is just something about this track. It’s strange and very off kilter, but the drop ¾ through is just joyous. Really hard to describe… just have a listen.
-
Eskimo Twins - Droid (Ado Remix):
Brutal. Has been destroying clubs since August. It’s a vicious, bloody, fleshy, sinew-y chainsaw attack in musical format.
-
ZZT – Zzafrika:
Huge. If you haven’t heard this you are probably deaf. It will smash everybody and anything right in the face wherever it is played. Guaranteed floor filler with very good reason.
-
Chromeo – Don’t Turn The Lights On (Carte Blanche Remix):
This has been Carte Blanche’s year somewhat, but this track has been stand-out for us. Curiously subtle, yet destroys floors at the same time. Can’t go wrong.
-
Jori Hulkonen - I Am Dead (Hercules & Love Affair Remix):
Beautifully haunting original tune from Jori and this remix is just as good. Great early doors house.
-
Erol Alkan & Boys Noize – Avalanche:
The production on this is simply astounding, love the analogue synths. Great one to play at any time of night.
-
Twin sister – All Around And Away We Go (Eskimo Twins Remix):
This has been a brilliant year for Twin Sister and we were really pleased to be asked to remix this one.
-
The 2 Bears – Follow The Bear:
The 2 Bears have had a good year. Really like their work. This featured heavily in our sets in the spring time and is a great mix of retro house and deep bass, works very well in dark early sets.
-
Scissor Sister – Invisible Light (Boys Noize Remix):
Straddling the electro, techno and pan pipe backing track divide, this is utterly epic. Everything that we love about Boys Noize in one remix.
We put out an EP (Judas) on Wax:On Music in the summer and after working on the tracks for such a long time, it was great finally be happy with them. Having such a great remix package made putting out the release a real highlight of the year for us.
We’ve also had the chance to remix some great artists (Twin Sister, Everything Everything, Justin Robertson etc.). We’ve been really happy with how they were received and support they that they’ve gotten.
We’ve discovered some great music in 2010 and we think it’s been a really strong year for new music in general. These are some albums that have loved this year.
Top Albums of 2010
-
Shit Robot – From the Cradle To The Rave:
It’s been a while coming but this was worth the wait. Best DFA album for a good while. Although lots of the tracks were originally singles and are quite old, it sits pretty well as an album. We love the sound palate on this.
-
Arcade Fire – The Suburbs:
Arcade Fire are one of those few bands who’s gigantic critical acclaim seems justified. They are one of those few bands who are regarded as ‘great’ already but will also be revered in years to come. This album is a grower, but once you give it time, it certainly rewards.
-
Simian Mobile Disco – Delicacies:
Simian have stuck their necks out with this and we respect that. This is a strange mix of spacey, analogue, synth laden techno. Sonically it’s amazing, the sounds and textures are brilliant. It’s pretty hard and dark in places but very melodic too.
-
Everything Everything – Man Alive:
They’ve received lots of press and publicity this year but in our opinion the hype is more that justified. Great, unique, original and fresh pop music. We’ve remixed their next single, which should surface in January.
-
Chemical Brothers – Further:
We always look forwards to a Chem’s release, they’ve been a big influence on us and Further doesn’t disappoint; a fantastic blend of everything indie and techno. Has also spawned some of the best remixes of the year, brilliant.
-
Hurts – Happiness:
Massive, massive synth pop. Huge, melodies and chords and we love it. Shamelessly.
-
Caribou – Swim: Interesting and always inventive. We love this album for so many reasons; too many to list here, but this is a very good one: Odessa.
-
Deftones – Diamond Eyes:
This album is a massive return to form, some of their strongest tracks in years. They’ll always have a special place in our hearts but this album stands on its own two feet. Amazing.
-
UNKLE – Where Did The Night Fall?:
This really works as an album. Unkle seem to have finally found that balance between indie rock and electronic. It hasn’t seen much press but it’s a real gem, definitely worth a listen.
-
Four Tet – There Is Love In You:
A beautiful album and very emotional at times. Four Tet has also been a big influence on the way we create music and this album is as intricate as ever. Nobody edits vocals like Four Tet.
Unfortunately, this year we have lost some really influential figures: Captain Beefheart, Solom Burke, Ronnie James Dio, and ‘Sleazy’ Peter Christopherson to name just a few.
Particularly sad for us was the recent passing of Peter Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle and Coil fame. Throbbing Gristle have been a source inspiration for us for a few years and the echoes of their experimental, avant garde approach to sound creation can be heard in many new acts sound today. They were more than just a band too, speaking out against homophobia and christain perversions.
We have done a little rework of Throbbing Gristle’s ‘Hot On The Heels Of Love’ which you can download, as our own little tribute to Sleazy. RIP.
Throbbing Gristle – Hot On The Heels Of Love (Eskimo Twins Rework)
We’re really looking forward to putting out some new tracks at the beginning of 2011, playing shows and working on plenty of remixes.
See you on the other side, and have a great festive period.
