Wax:On News | Matt Walsh Interview | 15/04/2010
Harry Benson caught up with Matt Walsh ahead of the upcoming EP release Honey Comb for Wax:On Music.
Q: Hi Matt, what are you up to?
A: Now? Working on a remix for POPOF, a new collaboration project with a french dude called "Zhao" and another remix as Clouded Vision. And also about to push my first two EPS with some gigs around them in London and Leeds in the next couple of weeks.
Q: You've just been on a big tour in Australia, how did that go?
A: It was a lot of fun, Australia is all about F.U.N.
Q: Where else have you been playing recently?
A: Just got back from Snowbombing Festival in Austria, with bruised ribs to prove it.
Q: Where are your all-time favouritie cities to play?
A: To be honest, Its a pleasure living in London, there are so many great clubs. I have loved all my gigs in Montreal, Barcelona, Tokyo and of course Berlin
Q: Name one thing you can't live without when traveling on the road...
A: My record bag.
Q: How do you prepare for your sets?
A: Just like Paul Ince when he played for Man Untd, I always put my shirt on just before i enter the club
Q: Most people will know you through your various tours and releases on Turbo, how did you become a part of the Turbo family?
A: I was warming up for Tiga in London and loads of people thought I was him, filming me and stuff. At first he was quite stand off about it, but then he realised "I can use this guy", so he started booking me to replace him so he could stay at home.
Q: Recently it seems like you've been working a lot more in the studio (as Clouded Vision and under your own name), did this happen naturally through DJing or was it always the plan to produce tracks?
A: Ive been asked this a few times and yes I did always want to make tracks, its a long process to learn and its something I have nowhere near perfected, but from djing you definately have a natural ear for how a dance track should be structured to work on a floor.
Q: When did you first take an interest in DJing?
A: When i started Uni I lived with three wannabe djs who played terrible records to keep me from being a good boy and doing my essays so i started to mix mine on their decks.
Q: What led you to work with Wax:On?
A: Dan's dance moves
Q: How would describe this release?
A: Techno with a childish edge, but still not really for girls.
Q: What DJs and Producers do you think people should watch out for this year?
A: Darabi, Clement Meyer, Zhao, Camel, Mike Mind, Julio Bashmore
Q: Lastly, Marmite, love it or hate it?
A: Cant stand it
