Wax:On News | Merry Christmas from Eskimo Twins | 22nd December 2011

This year has been great for us – we’ve spent a lot of time in the studio and have stockpiled loads of new tracks that will be ready to unleash early 2012. The summer was great fun with festival slots at Hideout in Croatia and Global Gathering being real highlights.

Remix wise, we’ve had the pleasure of reworking our chums People Get Real and Justin Robertston’s Deadstock 33’s project amongst others. We’ve been stoked by the support shown by DJ’s this year and are looking forward to getting more remixes and originals out in 2012.

As a thank you to everyone who has supported our music this year, here’s the best of 2011 by Eskimo Twins, especially for Wax:On.

Joakim – Nothing Gold

This album is a gem. It’s musically rich and full of ideas, but not necessarily an easy listen or ‘immediate’. If you put in the effort, this record will reward you in a big way. Joakim is a truly unique talent and has also put out some amazing music on his Tigersushi label this year. He also played two of the best DJ sets I saw in 2011.

Cliff Martinez & Various Artists - OST – Drive

Not only was Cliff Martinez’s original score perfectly fitted to this film, the track sync was spot on too. Johnny Jewel (of ‘Glass Candy’, ‘The Chromatics’, ‘Desire’ and ‘Italian Do It Better Records’) composed most of the new music for the film and his retro, heartfelt, electro sound fits perfectly with the style of the film. In particular, College’s ‘A Real Hero’, adds real emotional 80’s Top Gun moment.

Deerhoof – Deerhoof Vs. Evil

I’m a long time Deerhoof fan so was very excited about this when it came out early in the year. You can’t beat them for outright musical weirdness mixed with incredibly catchy pop hooks and this album hasn’t been off my iPod all year – I’m still nowhere near bored of it. There’s all their classic wonky hallmarks but with some new twists and surprising influences. Check out Secret Mobilization for a taster: Fucking. Rock - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSrlpyFVyaQ

Mogwai – Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

This may be an obvious choice, but it is an absolutely outstanding production as ever and the songwriting is impeccable. Post Rock is the closest thing guitar music has to techno in my opinion; the way it’s structured and the way it moves, I imagine that’s why I like it so much. Best on the album for me is Too Raging To Cheers; HUGE.

Kink – Existence

From Ovum Recording’s Miami 2011 sampler, we’ve played this in almost every set this year. Such a simple and versatile track. Kink is really on point at the moment and this track is a perfect example the more ‘fun’ side of his sound.

Wolfram (Ft. Haddaway) – Thing Called Love

This EP on Permanent Vacation was a big staple of our summer sets. The Legowelt remix was a highlight for many a DJ this year and we are no exception.

Niki & The Dove – Gentle Roar (Mylo’s Extended 12” Remix)

niki26thedove-motherprotect28coveroriginal29

This absolutely blew me away when I first heard it. The original song is cracking; very, very well written indeed, but Mylo’s managed to make it even better. Afro-tinged disco with some of the best synth work of the year by far. Also the brass that comes in at the end makes me go green with jealously that I didn’t write it. Amazing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmbiClEmoRE

Cosmo Vitelli - Running Backwards

Love this one so much. It’s pretty weird so has been hard to fit it into DJ sets but we’ve managed to shoehorn it into as many as possible this year – it’s been another staple. It’s incredibly original in the way it’s produced, the synths are lovely and warm and the mix is incredibly tight too. Plus it brass some brass in it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daAKb4WO7yY

Enjoy and Merry Christmas
